The History of the Scholarship Awards

The New York New Jersey Regional Joint Board of Workers United established the New York Clothing Manufactures Scholarship Fund in January 1973.
Acting in conjunction with employers and manufactures, the Union sought to create a four year college scholarship for children of eligible Union members.
The first award ceremony was held on June 18th 1973. The scholarship awarded the first recipient $500.00 per year. In 1979 the scholarship award increased to $750.00 and increased steadily thereafter. In 2000 the fund became $1000.00 per year— and lastly in $1,250.00 in 2003.
So far, 578 scholarships have been awarded since the founding of the program in 1973. Of the 578 student award winners, 566 have successfully graduated from college.
