New York New Jersey Joint Board Disaffiliates from UNITE HERE International Union

hyacinthThe elected rank and file executive board members of the New York New Jersey Regional Joint Board voted unanimously to disaffiliate from UNITE HERE, forming an independent union.

In doing so, New York and New Jersey Joint Board members joined 150,000 other union members across the country whose delegates and elected leaders also voted to disaffiliate from the international union.

The decision to leave the international union resulted from years of problems caused by a failed merger between UNITE and HERE. “It’s unfortunate it didn’t work out,” said John Gillis, Manger of the New York New Jersey Joint Board. “They didn’t share our goals to organize and obtain good contracts in all industries: hospitality, retail and manufacturing. In the future, we will build a partnership with SEIU that will provide us with the strength we need to continue the important work we do.”

The New York New Jersey Regional Joint board will continue to fight for justice in the hotel, retail and manufacturing industries in New York and New Jersey. For more information, contact your shop steward or call the union office at (201) 422-0900.
